Avraham “Avi” Cantor is a senior at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia. He is a two-sport captain for the baseball and basketball teams and the editor-in-chief for the digital school newspaper, SLAMedia.
He’s volunteered in his community through years of coaching basketball and flag football, along with participating in projects that help the underprivileged, such as delivering food to financially struggling immigrants through the Jewish Relief Agency.
Born to an owner of a dental office and the creative director of a graphic design company, Avi was exposed to a wide variety of interests. His mother enrolled him in art and music programs, while his father, a former gymnast and pole vaulter, signed him up for sports as young as 4 years old.
By the time he was nine, Avi was playing travel baseball and intramural basketball for the Taney Youth Baseball and Basketball associations.
However, he didn’t lose touch with his creative side. Throughout middle school, Avi experimented with different kinds of writing, including creative, analytical, and poetry. Around the same time, he became enamored by a genre of music introduced to him by an older cousin: rap.
The Center City native fell in love with the genre after hearing critically acclaimed rapper Eminem’s album “Recovery.” Avi combined his passions for writing and music, with topics including the secret behind rap superstar Cardi B’s appeal, “unladylike” women who are conquering stereotypes and misogyny through hip hop, and a profile on the multi-faceted promotional powerhouse known as “Lyrical Lemonade.”
Avi is using his passions to create his senior project, an endeavor he hopes to develop into a career.
Bass Boosted Media is a multimedia company that specializes in up-and-coming artists promotion. Avi uses his experiences as an SLAMedia staff writer and editor to research and write about each artist he promotes.
