Seizing opportunities

During the workshop’s third Saturday session, an award-winning Philadelphia journalist and the president of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP both told students they should always be on the lookout for and seize opportunities to pursue their interests and develop their careers.

Bobbi Booker, managing editor of PlanPhilly, a project of WHYY, shared how she got into journalism and her work as a jazz host and producer at the WRTI radio station.

She told students that persistence and patience are key to being a good journalist.

Catherine Hicks, president of the local chapter of the NAACP, talked to students about the role of the organization and how she navigates her dual roles as the head of the group and the publisher of the Philadelphia Sunday Sun.

She encouraged students to contact her if they are interested in contributing to the NAACP or the news organization.

Earlier in the day, students in the writing track worked one-on-one with their mentors — Inquirer reporters who have volunteered to guide students as they complete their stories.

The students are continuing to research and interview subjects as they work to complete their articles, which are tied together under the theme of this year’s workshop, “Untold Stories.” Students were encouraged to shine a spotlight on a person, community, or topic they think deserves media attention.

Students in the visuals track are continuing to shoot photographs as they work to complete their photo stories. They spent the day with volunteer photojournalists editing and looking through their work.
