2020 Workshop: Week 1 Recap

Week one of the 2020 Acel Moore Journalism Workshop at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020. Former Inquirer Editor Bill Marimow speaks to students during the opening session of the workshop.

Former Inquirer editor Bill Marimow welcomed 21 students from high schools across the Philadelphia region to the annual Acel Moore High School Journalism Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Marimow recalled his working relationship with Moore, a longtime Inquirer reporter and editor who founded the workshop in 1984.  He told workshop participants that Moore was an exceptional journalist, a teacher and mentor to a generation of journalists of color.

Students were greeted by staff volunteers in the Public Space and were given an explanation on what to expect during the monthlong program. Throughout the day, participants rotated in and out of four breakout sessions designed to introduce them to the fundamentals of print and photojournalism.

Later in the day with mentors leading discussion groups, students pitched story ideas that will revolve around this year’s workshop theme: Issues shaping the 2020 presidential election.
